Jaroslav Rudis

Jaroslav Rudiš is a writer, author of scenarios, theater and radio plays and a musician. He wrote the novels Nebe pod Berlínem, Grandhotel, Potichu, Konec punku v Helsinkách and Winterbergova poslední cesta and novellets Národní třída and Český ráj. His books have been published in many translations abroad and he has received several awards for his work, including the prestigious German Literary Houses Award. Together with artist Jaromír 99 he created the iconic comics Alois Nebel and they founded the music group Kafka Band.

He writes in Czech and German, lives in Lomnice nad Popelkou and in Berlin. He graduated from the Faculty of Education of the Technical University in Liberec, specialization German language - history. The city of Liberec plays a major role in his novel Grandhotel, whose protagonist is a 30-year-old hotel porter who is not willing to leave the city. The was a film made by director David Ondříček based on this story. The main character in his German-written novel Winterbergova poslední cesta, Wenzel Winterberg, almost a hundred year old, also comes from the metropolis below Ještěd. He claims to be as old as the Czechoslovakia and the crematorium in Liberec.
